Noni and Neigbouring Communities

Why the different spellings, Noni, Nooni or Noone: We use Noni when referring to the people and place, that is the people or land of Noni. We use Nooni when referring to the Language of the Noni (people). These two forms have been used throughout the New Testament translation project to distinguish the people from their language. This distinction is also represented in the various linguistics and literacy documents produced by SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics). This is the organisation that has been doing a lot in the development of the Nooni language.

What about Noone? The form represents the sound of the name. In many cases most of “i” sounds are “e” sounds, and this is the case with the name Noone referring also to the language. So the name of the language is either written as Nooni or Noone. The latter is what you can see most often as the name of our language on the list of the languages in the world. The Ethnologue code, for Nooni is nhu. This is a three letter code that distinguishes any language from another in the world.
